RISING taught me that I deserve, and can and should seek out, professionals who will support me the way *I* need to be supported. I reached out to a new attorney, who sat with me for TWO HOURS, truly listening to me, and who agreed to communicate with me often and in the modes that will be most comfortable and successful for me, and assured me that the extra patience and hand-holding I need are actually part of his job. It was two days of soul-searching and tumbling the words and wisdom from RISING around in my head that led me to the bold step of firing my attorney and hiring another one. The burden of “just dealing with” a professional who was a mismatch for me has been lifted, and I have new confidence and feel supported and in good hands.

I highly recommend RISING to anyone facing the need for financial, legal, and organizational support. Joon Madriga’s advice is personal, specific, and inspiring!

If you have children just heading out to start their adult lives, buy this book. If you know people who are struggling, and don’t know how to handle money, buy this book for them. If you’ve tried to read financial help books before, but become lost in the jargon and difficult concepts, buy this book. I wholeheartedly recommend it.

It’s not giving up a latte or how to make it work on $50,000. It’s how to get ahead and take care of yourself on $25,000 or less. As a disabled person, it spoke to me strongly and I walked away feeling less stigmatized and shameful than I have in years.

I have tried reading many money books. I did read Your Money or Your Life about 15 years ago, and though I have tried reading others in the interim, Rising is the only other book I’ve been able to stick with. I am a spendypants who has re-committed to changing her ways, but this feels like an uphill battle against a rather strong wind. The other books were starting in a place that was already beyond my reach, often in a language I felt was off-putting, or didn’t apply to my own circumstances/mind-set.

Rising is starting exactly where I am, broke and at-risk of being that way for the rest of my life. Joon Madriga’s book is helping me through the emotional processes which have been the sticking point for me. I have self-discipline, I have good intentions, I have intelligence, and now Rising is helping me use all that goodness to work through the underlying issues which have been defeating my best efforts for change in the past 11 years.

…highly recommend it for anyone who thinks they are unable to save money, and also for anyone who wants a better understanding of true financial struggles.

…so many great tips and exercises that will help you take actionable steps towards overcoming your fears and improving your finances. The author’s uplifting personal story from living on the streets to living a fulfilling and financially secure life is sprinkled throughout the book. Her life philosophy is truly inspiring; we would all do well to want fewer material things, enjoy life’s little pleasures, cherish those who mean the most to us, and help those in need. I was saddened to read that there are so many barriers for people struggling financially, due to disabilities or other unfortunate circumstances…
